I am actually quite sad to be writing this review because I had such high expectations of this book ... I LOVED his first two novels. LOVED. Like Holy Grail LOVED. But, this one just fell flat for me. It certainly didn't meet my expectations and it was a disappointment in comparison to his first two novels. It appears that most readers seem to love it so take my review with that in mind. Most readers seem to have felt differently from me about this one.

My primary issue with this novel is how dis

While The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns were just brutally, devastatingly good, And the Mountains Echoed is much more quiet in it's greatness. Hosseini is an amazing writer, the characters are deep and real and the story (or stories in this case) are complex and heart wrenching in the profound and regular ways of life.

This was a more patient and moderated read for me, which ultimately I think was good. It gave more time to digest and think about the interconnectedness of the stories

This is more of a collection of stories with connected characters than a novel with a cohesive plot. I thought it was well done and enjoyed the narrative through many decades, countries and cultures.

Beautifully written with good character development. As usual, there are some heart-wrenching moments in the book, where life in the real world doesn't always pacify as it does in the literary world. When young Abdullah and Pari are separated at an early age, their lives, and those of others near them are rendered apart, but Hosseini manages to weave a thread that holds them all together through the various storylines in the book. This is a multi-generational story, starting in colonial Afghanis ...more

Finished up the audio a couple of days ago. On the first disk, I thought what I'd picked up to listen to was going to be a collection of short stories. In a way, it is just that. But the stories are all so cleverly connected.

IMO, Hosseini has truly outdone himself with this novel. I was sorry when it was over. I know I will read it in book form and listen to the audio again.

And again ...

And again ...

Loved this one almost as much as Kite Runner. I loved reading this one after hearing him discuss it at the book festival, it gave me some background for several of the characters. Highly recommended!
