I don't think I could add anything to a review that other's haven't already said. I thought the characters were well thought out, the premise of the book was really good. ...more

This book came out of nowhere for me but I'm so glad that it did. I'd heard about it hear and there but nothing about whether or not it was good. And I knew it was historical fiction about a lighthouse - neither of which were screaming out to me to read it! But, then a friend mentioned that she loved it so I thought I'd give it a shot. And, wow! I really loved this book. It's definitely in my top 10 favorites of the year!

The emotional impact of this book cannot be overstated. That is what made

I finished the audio version this evening. It is read by Noah Taylor. He has a voice that so puts you in mind of a seaside location.

Don't know exactly why I ordered the CD's from the library - could be for two reasons:

1) ... there is some group who has it on for the monthly read - that's how I usually choose my books;

2) i just luuuuuvvvvvv that title!

Maybe it was for both reasons - dunno'. If you happen to know, gimmee a 'hey'.

Either way, I'm glad I did. This is one of those stories that grabs

I had really high expectations for this book, and it fell a little short. I really liked the beginning and it had a strong finish, but a lot of the latter portion of the book really fell flat for me. Stedman showed a really strong touch at developing the characters and setting, but parts of the storyline really tested my willingness to suspend disbelief.
There's a lot of sadness and hardship throughout the book; it takes place shortly after WWI, and that tragedy plays a large role in the events

I liked this book, but there was something lacking for me. The moral dilemma of finding a baby in a boat with the father dead. Deciding not to report it and keep the baby. All of the repercussions that brings. I think it makes for interesting discussion, but I did sort of feel like I was being emotionally manipulated. It was all too in-your-face for me. I'd give this 3.5 stars, rounding down to 3 because it was not as good as the other 4-star books I've read this year. ...more

This book has been on my shelf for awhile and after having read it I’m not sure why I haven’t picked it up yet. A heartbreaking story of mistakes, and love and the complexity of human relationships. Highly recommended.
