What Members Thought

This is a beautifully written and deceptively simple novel with a premise that seems a bit different than the usual literary fiction. I really enjoyed this very quiet and thought provoking novel. I don't think its what I'd call fast paced in any way but its very engaging.
What really stands out here is the writing ... wow. It's breathtaking in places. I found myself just taking in the words and feeling overwhelmed by the pure beauty of the language. Combine that with the fact that the novel lends ...more

I really, really enjoyed this book. Harold sets off on a journey, a pilgrimage, and during his 600+ mile walk he reflects on all the small, and large tragedies of his life as well as the loves, friendships, high points and low points. A very moving tale, written with a lovely, light prose, of two good people reconciling themselves with their many faults.
Sadly, the story was lessened somewhat by the unsurprising-surprise twist of "what happened to David?" I was also a bit pit off by the story of the opportunistic "pilgrims" but I guess that was sort of their point.
Still, a very good book that I would definitely recommend. 4 stars. ...more

Harold Fry and his wife, Maureen have come to what you might call a mid-life crisis. Their lives together are dull and both seem to spend a lot of emotional energy hiding from the other. There is a son, and Maureen is always waiting for him to visit. Harold too, though he hides it well from his wife, yearns to see him, seems to be looking for some way the distance can be filled between them.
Then a letter arrives, addressed to Harold, from a woman he once worked with. Though not a lover, Queenie ...more

This is the story of an ordinary man who goes out to send a letter to an old friend who is dying of cancer, and somehow just keeps on walking and ends up on a walk across England to deliver the letter in person.
This book is not filled with a lot of plot driven action and in that way I can see how it may turn some people off. This book is, however, filled with a lot of mental action, contemplation. Harold is newly retired, has a troubled relationship with his wife and son, and now out of his ele ...more
