First book I've read by Ann Patchett and I so enjoyed her writing style. The only thing I didn't like about this book was how short and abrupt the ending was - I felt like I needed something more.
I've downloaded another book by this author on my Kindle and look forward to reading it. ...more

Book is close to five stars. (Though the last couple of pages are awful - I wish she'd just left them off, or at least set it up better). I had a few issues with plot but the writing is lovely.

The writing in this book is just stupendous. It's like a painting that you can just be in the presence of and appreciate it for the colors and brushstrokes, not the content. The characters are well drawn, complex and changing. The relationships are complicated and change with the different scenarios as they likely would in reality.

An engrossing story but the ending surprised me - I didn't figure those two characters to get married.
I enjoyed the way the author built the characters - even the leader of the terrorist group seemed to be liked by everyone at the end.
Something I didn't like? I do not like to see a character favoured in the way the opera singer was. We are all of us just people ... children of the universe. We needn't be worshipped.

I probably need more time to digest this book. I'm giving this book a 3 star rating, but probably more of a 3.5. It is beautifully written. I really want to go see an opera now! I didn't love the ending. I don't know what I expected or what would have been more satisfying, but that wasn't really it. Overall a good read.

Lyrical in prose (the bathroom scene still makes me gasp), well-written. I'm a Patchett fan now.
