Lessing presents the reader with an interesting look at marriage and family with a close look at the Lavotts, whose portrayal of idyllic marriage and family is life is shattered with the birth of their fifth child, Ben. Harriet and David, in fact, do NOT have the perfect marriage although they strive for that at the expense of their family and friends; it truly feels as though the only thing these two have in common is their desire for a large family. creepy, creepy, really really creepy, oh so creepy. isn't this every parent-to-be's nightmare? only SO much creepier.
