A solid 4.5 stars, just short of 5. The book's structure threw me a little, it felt like I read one book & it abruptly ended & I started another slightly annoying book within the same book cover. Eventually the 2 books were somewhat roughly combined, and we moved into a quest. I liked the book more and more as the last 200 or so pages flew by, but the second quarter through to there required some patience. I very much like the main characters, and I care about their fates. I want to start The Tw

"All those years, waiting for the Army, and it turns out the Army is us."
This book was exciting but also filled with a vast melancholy. In many ways, it was mostly an adventure story, but it also imparts the valuable lesson summed up in my favorite quotation from the book, above.
Don't wait for anyone to save you, just do the work to save yourself.
I'll be reading the next one within a few days.

It's taken me almost a month to feel ready to write this review. I wanted to sit with the novel a bit before I came and put my thoughts out there.
I began hearing about this novel months before it came out and there was a lot of hype about it which always makes me weary because I worry that I'll be disappointed. I waited and waited and waited for the release date and giggled when I got the note from the library that it was waiting for me.

This is a 3.5 - 4 star read. I probably would have given it a higher rating had I not recently read Stephen Kings' The Stand. The groupings of people, the end of the world as we know it, the wars within wars were all good but done before. The twist with the vampires to me really didn't shine through enough.

I would give this a 4.5 if possible. It was slow going during the first 1/2 all the set-up. It was sometimes confusing, but once they started going out on their "mission" with Amy I COULD NOT put it down. There will be a sequel and I am so happy because it just leaves you hanging. Although it will not be until 2012.

I listened to an audio version - I can see why the actual book is called a 'doorstopper'. Long story - but all in all, I enjoyed it.
Found it hard to keep all the characters and events straight.

What an epic read!! 800+ pages and it still ends in cliff hangar fashion. Can't wait to the next book due out this year sometime!
