I really loved this one! Veronica Speedwell is a one of a kind character. Deanna Raybourn did an amazing job creating both a world and a group of characters that are truly outstanding! This is one that I suspect that I will be recommending over and over again. Solid mystery. Outstanding historical fiction. And the relationship between Mr. Stoker and Veronica is one of my favorites in all of literature! I highly recommend this one! You can't go wrong with this one! ...more

I really wanted to love this book. It was very slow pacing, so it took what felt like forever to read. Oh, and honestly the pace was what made me not like this book. I was pretty deep into the book before you realize the actual plot. Not the best book I've ever read. The characters were at least pretty well done. Veronica was a bit unbelievable at times...considering the times. As a review, I'd say you may really like the book or like me think meh. ...more

I’m glad I read this first book in a series of 7. The main character, Veronica, is smart and bold and adventurous. I will enjoy following her into more mystery solving!

This story has an intriguing beginning and a very suspenseful ending, but the middle part drags a bit. I could have skipped a few chapters and not missed much. Even so, it’s a great book! I love how fearless Veronica is!
