I am fairly ambivalent about this novel. I didn't LOVE it but I didn't HATE it. It was just 'ehhh.' It took me awhile to really get into the story or care at ALL about the characters. And, ultimately, I never truly cared about the characters or the story. I stuck with it, waiting for it to all come together and make me care. No such luck. Again, not a bad book but just one that ultimately left me feeling indifferent. I just didn't feel like it offered anything new or different or even interestin ...more

I loved this story about a girl heading home to Alabama to face her past and her future all in one messy family situation. While the story has definite serious themes, the narration is funny and I found myself smiling quite a bit as a read. As for Burr, the protagonist's boyfriend, he has become one of my favorite characters in recent memory. The author transitions from past to present flawlessly, without dumbing it down with dates for the readers. Thank you. ...more

I liked the story and since I was born and raised in the South it felt familiar. I will read more from this author.

Although this had been recommended to me several times, I had low expectations. I picked it up as a placeholder book between several "heavier" books that I am really excited about.

Boy, was I surprised! It was really charming. The characters were well-done and the plot was not the cliche I was expecting. It's not high literature or anything, but it was definitely a cut above similar books.

It was a funny book and I loved Burr who was solid and her rock. Arlene was definitely flighty as her family.

I loved reading about Arlene, a.k.a. "Lena" and her return to her small Alabama hometown. The story is told between alternating chapters from her childhood to present-day. Arlene has left her life in Alabama behind to pursue a career in teaching in Chicago. She has not returned to Alabama in ten years and now has to face her secretive past. I fell in love with Arlene's character and I loved how the author was able to surprise the reader with the ending. Great read! ...more
