I didn't want to put this book down. Benioff is a marvelous storyteller. He hooked me from the onset, when he cast Lev and Kolya together, the looter and the deserter, and sent them out on an impossible mission. I had no choice but to follow along as they faced danger in the cold, snowy landscape of WWII Russia. This was a beautifully written book, with a thrilling story and characters that wormed their way right inside my heart. I listened to this one on audio--fantastic narration by Ron Perlman--but think that when i reread it, which I suspect I will, I will do so in print so as not to miss any of the prose.

I picked this book up on a whim and I am glad that I did. The City of Thieves is the story of friendship and survival. An unlikely duo pair up when they meet in a prison cell. In order to live they are sent on an impossible mission to find a dozen eggs. When food is virtually scarce and ration cards are like gold, Lev and Kolya prepare for a most dangerous adventure.

I found myself smiling and laughing at the witty Kolya, and I enjoyed Lev's story. I would highly recommed this book. ...more
