I have to start off by saying that I LOVED this author's first book, The Lace Reader. I read it just a few weeks ago, in preparation for reading this one, as for some reason I thought this was some sort of loose sequel. While there are some over-lapping characters, they are minor in both books and there isn't really any "update" on the characters from the first book.

Although I'd liked her first novel, The Lace Reader, I thought it had a number of flaws that made it difficult for me to love it. I was concerned those same flaws would be found in this second novel but I thought the premise sounded really interesting. I am so glad that I read it. I really enjoyed it.
It is a very different novel from The Lace Reader. I felt that The Map of True Place was much more thoughtful and introspective. It wasn't as focused on action but rather on the emotion and growth o ...more

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from the publisher through Goodreads. Thank you to the publishers, and to Brunonia Barry for a wonderful book.
This story of a woman who doesn't truly know what she is leaving behind or moving towards is engaging from the first chapter. Zee Finch is a beautifully written character - layered and flawed and as introspective as you'd expect a young therapist who witnessed her mother's suicide to be. She's also undeniably likable, and I found myself a ...more

I really enjoyed this story. I liked her The Lace Reader and some of the characters from that book were briefly mentioned in here. Ann was a more powerful presence though. I liked this one better. A good story with a happy ending and maybe the psychis was right.

Barry has written a mysteriously moving novel that captivates the reader with skillful intertwining of character and setting. Salem comes alive, its history and present, so that it is as much a character in the story as the people themselves. I got the sense the air the characters breathed in Salem infused their lives and affected their destinies.

I feel like this book took awhile to find its footing and I had a difficult time relating to and understanding the characters until about 100 pages into the book, but then it just took off for me. The weaving of the lives of all of these interesting people into a tale that mimic's one once told my the main character's mother is really something special and something that was difficult to put down once I hit "the spot." Now I plan on going back to read The Lace Reader, the first book by the autho
