It kills me to rate a Madeline Miller novel 3 stars but I have to with this one. Circe had everything that I usually love in a book but it just didn't work for me. It mostly didn't work for me as a result of the pacing of the novel. There were large sections of the book that were B.O.R.I.N.G to me. I almost put it down several times. Nothing terrible about this, it is well written. However it didn't hold my interest very well until the last 20% and that was probably more a case of being able to see the end in sight that gave me that incentive to push through...

This book was absolutely lovely and completely engrossing. The book I pick up after my favorite series is usually doomed to fail, but Circe delivered the goods on all fronts!
I do not get what the hype was about. This was a difficult book to get through. It started out well but it felt like reading a textbook almost. Again, I applaud the author for completing a monumental task but it wasn't for me. There will be those that love this book, I'm just not one of them.

The story of Circe, as told in the Greek myths is an interesting one, so I was keen to see it explored further. Alas, this book was not the one to deliver that. The characters are wooden, Circe dull and the gods far too human. The characters described are already well known and described with greater superiority and eloquence in Homer, Apollodorus and Hesiod.
