I'll start by telling you about the day I found this book. It was a humid and hot Summer day, my co-worker in the guesthouse I volunteer at woke me up and said "Hey, a guesthouse near-by got sold, if we go now, they will let us take their sheets and their pillows."
Sheets and pillows?
Well, that's what she took.
When we walked in, she went directly to the rooms to start collecting everything we could need in our guesthouse. But, let me tell you, guesthouses are like treasure chambers for things th

I didn't really "read" this book - but listened to the audiobook in the car. This was after I listened to the Angela's Ashes audiobook and was on a big audiobook kick. Only after listening to these two books did I realize that I'd really prefer to read rather than listen to most books. But The White Tiger was very suited to this medium given the style of narration which is meant to be letters from the protagonist Balram to the Chinese Prime Minister, having a more personal story-telling quality. ...more

Having just finished up Between the Assassinations, I avidly began The White Tiger. It is everything I expected it to be and I am enjoying it immensely.

While I found the story compelling, I came away with a complete dislike of all the characters, including the narrator, aka the White Tiger, Munna, Balram and Entrepreneur. The powerlessness of the multitude, servitude and the corruption of government was deplorable; however my empathy towards the plight of the Indians and Balram was not enough to overcome my distaste for Ba ...more

The White Tiger is an intersting look at what life is like in modern day India. Balram, the narrator tell a unique tale of his life by writing a letter to the Premier of China who will be visiting his town. He writes about his childhood and how the poor are alwats fighting to stay alive and how the rich are always fighting to stay on top. The corruption that takes place on a daily basis is an eye-opener. I enjoyed the style of writing and the reading about life in India. Well written and highly ...more

I really enjoyed the first portion of this novel. The writing style was refreshing and funny. However, it got old really fast. I found myself not really invested in reading on, as I really didn't connect to the main character. All in all it was an interesting read, but not sure I'd recommended it. ...more
