Lord of the Flies by William Golding was written in the 1950s - but this haunting coming-of-age story is dark, thought-provoking and unnervingly timeless.
I first read this as a child at school, I think it was on the English syllabus but it is not just a story for kids - in fact I probably got even more from it, as the cynical adult I have become, than I did all those years ago.

William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a troubling look at humanity and society from the perspective of a group of kids. What makes it all the more troubling is the way it challenges our belief that children are innocent and only adulthood corrupts them. This book was slow to start for me, but I finally got into it around 2/3 of the way through. enough to bump it up to three stars. I recall the book cover from high school days, but can't remember reading it back then. Glad I stuck with it.
