I randomly picked up this audio book while living in Texas. It turned out to be quite a coincidence that I chose to listen to this book at the precise time that I did. Let me begin with a little background on the novel. First there are two related story lines in this book … a past that contributes to a present.

I had a bit of a problem getting comfortable with all of the characters and their places in this story but once I had that figured out, I couldn't put the book down. This is the story of a young orphaned girl who grows up in a "hard" place, managing to survive by her wits and much luck. She grows into a proper young lady, a teacher, who becomes comfortable in her new life. A series of tragedies takes her from the Jefferson, NC, area (where I live ) back to her the old homeplace.
