This novel is modern is so many ways it must have been unimaginably ahead of it's time when published in 1857. In the thick of the romantic period Flaubert wrote a novel that Mark Twain would have (may well have) enjoyed because it shakes off the thrilling heroics of romantic literature. Instead Flaubert challenges us to identify with characters who are "all too human". He accomplishes this largely through his style which juxtaposes within a single paragraph truly eloquent romantic descriptions
