[close] I'm going to make the first suggestion! I loved this book. It's also on Obama's reading list this year. It's a memoir of a young woman raised in Fundamentalist Mormon community in rural Idaho. She had no formal education during her childhood but was amazingly able to get through college at BYU and eventually finish her PhD at Cambridge. Highly recommended!

This is an AMAZING memoir. I really can't recommend it enough. Her story really resonated with me as I also grew up in a religious cult with a mentally ill parent. My parents weren't Mormon, nor End Time survivalists, but it was surprising how I could identify with some of her childhood experiences. It is amazing how much she was able to contend with and still come out from the experience as a functioning adult. Highly recommended. ...more

Chilling and compelling. Couldn’t put it down. Literally. Realized my hand was numb from holding the book so tightly when I finished reading. Truth really is stranger than fiction. Westover’s survival saga is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. I hope her memoir inspires others in seemingly hopeless circumstances to take action to save themselves.

Difficult story of family relationships. How we deal with ourselves and our families as we grow up and understand there are other things to learn and ways to think.
