I read this after it was recommended by the Point Blank podcast. It's the story of a jaded detective who becomes personally involved in the killing of a friend and the rape and murder of another.

Fabio Montale is a cool, noir protagonist. Attractive and tough, like the classic P.I., his maverick, not by the book approach feels convincing in the Marseille setting. Total Chaos by Jean-Claude Izzo (1995); Excellent...very suspenseful in a street-wise way...Fabio Montale is a cool cop who gets pulled into some murder cases with a personal connection. -I lived in Istres, France, just north of Marseille in '95 & '96...I went to Marseille about 10 times on business, Total Chaos took me right back there, very realistic...only minor compliant is there were a few lengthy jags about food, no biggie...I will read the other two books of the trilogy...4.5 out of 5.0 s ...more

Fabio the policeman is flawed like any other we find in noir, but he is determined to find out why and who murdered his old friends. Other than Fabio, a main character is the city of Marseille itself. Izzo captures the feel of the of the streets and the down
