It's always exciting discovering a new author, whose work I can't wait to dive into more. It's great reading a pulp noir novel from a woman's perspective (with a man as the "femme fatale" no less! ha!) and written with the same tough talk of some of the hard-boiled classics. In the book, a young, bright-eyed club bookkeeper finds herself living the good life after she becomes the protégé of an aging but still glamorous (and still ruthless) mob queen. She might lose everything after breaking the ...more

I love the language and the writing here - it sounds so authentic and flows with slick ease. The action was engaging although I struggled to accept that our shrewd and emotionally ruthless narrator would risk it all over a dedicated loser and chump like Vic Riordan. The sheer stupidness of this plot device and the notion that great sex makes a doormat of her, kind of annoyed me. So that’s the lost star.

What happens when you cross the Equal Rights Amendment with gangsters? You get Gloria Denton, a mobster in a fashionable skirt with all the grit matching any male gangster with a gun. The stories narrator is her protege and she learns all the tricks of the trade and falls in all the trappings of love and lust.

This book is a fresh take on noir mobsters in a casino town, the dialogue juicy with no punches pulled. Told from a woman's point of view we see little difference between a Kingpin and a ..

A pretty solid little slice of noir, with good characters and good dialogue. Gives the reader exactly what they expect, no more no less. I've been putting off reading more Meg Abbott for a while now. Starting to realize that's a big mistake. When I get back into a noir/hard-boiled phase, she'll be high on my list. ...more

The unnamed protagonist finds herself courted then working for an organized crime queenpin. During the course of her work, she meets and falls for a man who brings her nothing but trouble. Tension builds as the characters play a deadly metal chess match with secrets, deceptions, and double-crosses. A fantastic modern take on classic hardboilded/noir.

First exposure to Megan’s novels and was quite impressed. Queenpin is a twisted tale with plenty of enjoyable noir. I’ve been wanting to get into crime fiction and gave this one a try. The female perspective in Queenpin was both interesting and appealing in a genre typically male dominated. Megan’s writing is straight to the point and gripping. The last third of the book was phenomenal and had me furiously turning the page. Queenpin is quick read and definitely recommend it!

4.5 actually. Two strong, dynamic female characters. Taut writing. Great take on classic noir and hardboiled tropes with a fresh eye.
