I had to DNF this at 150 pages/30%. I loved the action parts of this book but the long drawn out info dumps between was just so slow and boring for me. I couldn't figure out if it had anything to do with the story and I never really connected with the character despite the constant inner monologue. ...more

Holy moly this one dragged on and on-- even the parts with action were bogged down with words! I kept waiting for something to happen only to realize something had happened, it just wasn't written in a way I found exciting.
I wouldn't call this YA at all -- there isn't sex on page and just 1 make out scene-- it just is so dense, this doesn't fit for that age group, so just a heads up there in case you are looking at the GR tags and see Young Adult up there.

I was extremely surprised and thrilled by this book. After the disappointment of the Twilight Series, I really am wary of reading 'soft' paranormal novels that aren't racy or classically gory. But, McKinley is foremost a wonderful storyteller with a way of drawing you inside the character's mind and taking you on a journey of self-exploration with them.
