If I had to choose whether to recommend Akata Witch or Who Fears Death, I’d definitely choose Akata Witch. Because this was basically Who Fears Death but for a much younger audience which means it focuses more on the story and characters without there being a sex scene every two pages.

Magical realism in Nigeria! Sunny is all things, but at the same time she is completely different than one might expect. She has a long list of descriptors: albino Nigerian-descendant born in America who returned, only to be teased by the local children, she befriends a boy who lives next to a "free agent" who doesn't play by society's rules. Turns out our athletic, smart heroine is a magic user.

This is a well-written, quickly paced magic school story where the students have to stop the bad guy.

Soooo I really love the characters and world building and magic but the big showdown/face off felt unexpectedly rushed and kind of un climatic? I almost would have preferred just being immersed in the world and the daily lives of the four students and not have a “big baddie” at all?

I liked it. I could see my teen self liking this a lot. I'm glad I read one of her works, and can definitely recommend her books to my patrons. Definitely some great magical world building! ...more
