I am in complete awe of China Mieville's creativity and imagination; this man is a quite astonishing writer. "Railsea" is one of his books aimed at younger readers but it's a fabulous read for anyone who remembers the classic adventure stories of their youth and appreciates a good twist on an established story. This book owes much to Melville's "Moby Dick" but there are nods to many a classic tale of adventure and daring-do and the book clips along at a rare pace. All that would be enough in its

Didn't quite hit the heights for me, and at times the fourth-wall-breaking really grated - like when a card-happy ref wants to be the star of the football match.

In general, I liked the book's concept of the verse that is described there with the different layers and some of the folklore, which showed potential and imagination. However I had some issues both with the narrator and the character {singular?} development.
I enjoyed the general steam-punk like feeling of the world with its different tinkering technologies. I wish I have read Moby Dick and recalled it more clearly to compare it better. In some way it also touches on the tale of Dune, bringing w ...more
