The Things They Carried has been floating around the edges of my book-loving conversations for years, but it wasn't until my school decided to make it required reading for 11th graders that I took the time to read it. Within the first segment, I was captured. Tim O'Brien's use of run-on sentences and parallel structures helped to showcase the internal and external struggles associated with the Vietnam War.
