For a children's book this story seemed to have a lot of violence in it. I know a number of children's books either have a violent section or perceive an act of violence, like the witch shoving Hansel and Gretel into the oven or the wolf eating up Little Red Riding Hood, but this story seemed to repeat the violence over and over again.

The novel is about a warren of rabbits who must find a new home due to their sanctuary being overrun by a housing development. The story is about their jou

who knew a story about rabbits could be so compelling?

It took me a little bit to settle into this book, but once I was in -- I was all the way in- dreaming about these rabbits, having nightmares about the scrapes and ultimately determined to finish this book to see how it would all end. The adventure of a lifetime some would say.

Because I have consistently encountered this title on lists of required high school reading or best books recommended alongside adult titles, I assumed I would be reading an adult novel. But, these adventures of anthropomorphic rabbits in search of a new home, was written for and seems intended for children. I could see this as a children’s classic next to titles such as “Charlotte’s Web” and “Jungle Book”.

I find Adams writing style a little heavy but I enjoyed both the animal characters and the aspect of social comment in the story.

Like what the hell did I just read? As I reading it, the intro kept popping back in my head and I kept thinking about a dad telling this tale to his two young girls and it was just even creepier. I suppose if you really enjoy battle scenes and strategy planning, you might like this book. As for me, well now at least I can say I’ve read it.

It took me six weeks to read the first half and 3 days to read the second half. So it did get better for me in the end. The book was brutally descriptive and too wordy for my taste. However, once it got moving, the story was inventive and unpredictable. I've heard some people say they had to read this book in sixth or seventh grade. I've always liked to read, but that would have been a tough read for me at that age! It's no kid's book! ...more
