Keneally has written an Australian classic that continues to resonate. The chant of Jimmie Blacksmith to me is about a man displaced. In an attempt to try and meet the conditions imposed upon him to become part of white society he comes to the gradual realisation that nothing will ever be good enough. That he will always be an outsider, a man who will never belong in the white man's world.
