Kirri Smith was an artist, and owned a gallery in Cairns. When American Daniel Brand wandered past her gallery on a short break before he headed to Sydney, he was shocked by a sense of familiarity with a picture in the window. On heading into the gallery, and spotting Kirri, he felt like he’d been hit by a brick! For Kirri was the beautiful young woman he had fallen in love with in New Orleans two years ago, and who had promised to be his wife. For Kirri was the beautiful young woman he had fallen in love with in New Orleans two years ago, and who had promised to be his wife. After her disappearance, he had spent countless hours looking for her, plus he hired a private investigator, to no avail. And now, here she was, in front of him, smiling, but only in a welcoming, professional manner. She didn’t know him…she didn’t seem to recognise him! Could she be acting? How could she not remember him? When he suddenly noticed a picture of a little girl, he asked Kirri who she was…Catelyn was Kirri’s daughter…

In total confusion, he rushed from the shop. He was angry, full of bitterness, but also he found there was a little bit of hope there too. Suddenly, the screeching of tyres announced the impending arrival of a vehicle, and he was hit hard and flung high in the air, hitting the pavement with a thud.

In the ensuing days, the police interviewed Daniel, and Kirri also visited the hospital. She couldn’t explain why she needed to be at the hospital, except to say that this man incited a feeling in her that she couldn’t work out…she needed to learn more about him. She sketched a profile of the man driving the vehicle which hit Daniel, though the police were sceptical at first.

Daniel was concerned about his business partner in Sydney, whose father had recently passed away, and the fact that he was evasive when he wanted to meet with him to view their financial statements. His suspicions were aroused further when another attempt was made on his life, albeit a supposed accident.

With Daniel in danger, and of course Kirri and Catelyn also in danger through association with Daniel, he tried desperately to find a motive for the attacks, and also to keep Kirri and Catelyn safe. But would he work out what was happening before it was too late? The horror he felt at losing Kirri again, after he had lost her two years ago tore at his heart! There was a killer out there who, it seemed, wouldn’t stop until Daniel was dead! Would he succeed?

I have wanted to read more of Aussie author Sandy Curtis for awhile, after reading a short story and being hooked some time back. I managed to download most of her books onto my kindle last year, so thought I’d start with this one, and I loved it! Extremely fast paced, with action the whole way through. Plenty of twists to keep the plot going, with some romance threaded through the pages.
