This is a GR giveaway title, one I received some time ago, and it got buried in my enormous TBR pile! I will start it within the next day or so..

This book was totally out of my ‘comfort zone’ in what I usually read, but I really enjoyed it.

This book was totally out of my ‘comfort zone’ in what I usually read, but I really enjoyed it.

On the way to hospital in a small town in Ausphalia for the birth of the new baby, a Ne’verman approached Mary with his blue hand out...’Got a dollar missus?’ After a short conversation, she passed the dollar over, and the Ne’verman predicted her son would have great potential. On saying that, a shadow seemed to lift from her. After her child was born, with no discomfort whatsoever, names were discussed. The family tradition was to name the sons John. But John (Dad) wanted to break with tradition, and so he became Glide.

As Glide grew through childhood, he seemed to have a magic ability, an amazing affinity with animals, to the point of hand feeding the python which was after the chooks. His love of animals and the outdoors increased with him bringing home wounded animals to hand rear until they were well enough to be released back into the wild. He had a very rare gift.. he could visualize. During his years in uni, his ability helped him immensely, and along with his best mate, Johnno, they did very well.

But his love of the outdoors didn’t help him get the job he wanted, and after months of applying to every conservation place he could, he faced the inevitable. He ended up working in an office in Brissie, and there he stayed for four years, hating it more and more, until the day Ne’wang, the Ne’verman from the time of his birth appeared, and whisked him through a gateway to Auslan, a former paradise in need of help.

There we meet Strongarm, who is an elephant, but says he’s not. Hernandes the imp, who rides Horsey the Roo. The wicked witch, along with her henchmen, the giant dwarf and Goresh, the bird who could listen to conversations and report in. Mix this up with the potent drink Green Mist, supplied by Plonkers, and the mystery of Slowtime, where you definitely didn’t want to be, and Glide wasn’t sure what to think. Was he having a nightmare, was he in Barley? But he had to help them all, and work out a way to defeat the witch, and keep Ne’wang in Auslan for good.

This is a unique book, one that has comedy, fantasy and magic, along with an amazing Australian flavour.

I especially liked the beginning of this novel and while it didn't proceed the way that I expected, it was a journey into the fantastic. I particularly like the Australian and other references that were slightly off-centre. There is also a thread of satire that runs through the story. If you like witches, talking elephants and other strange characters then this book is for you. ...more
