This was a poignant story showing what a slippery slope deception can lead us down. It reminds me of that famous line of Sir Walter Scott's - "Oh! What a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive!"
I can see what led to the beginning of the deception - and if the 2 main characters, Tom and Isabel, hadn't kept the baby that washed up on their beach, I'm not sure what would have become of Isabel, so stricken with grief after her recent miscarriage and so isolated on the island they li ...more

Such an incredible book.
I started this last night and just finished. I'm still wiping my eyes. I'm childless by choice and I still feel emotionally gutted by what I've read.
Apart from the central storyline, which I won't comment on to avoid spoiling, the author touches on the minor characters own losses of unborn and young children, and fully grown children lost to war. The best part of this book was the author's ability to show the inner conflicts of both the main and some subsidiary characters. One wrong decision, with all the understandable reasons that led to it, leads to an infinity of complications . The historical and physical settings were both well described and the final outcome was well conceived.

Everybody had so much love to give, although some of it misplaced, and the little baby girl was adorable. I also liked how Stedman described the coast of Western Australia, I could almost feel the sun and the salty wind, sm

It took me a while to get into this, but I did enjoy it once I did. It's slow paced, perhaps that is why it didn't grab me as quickly as I wanted. Here's my review at my blog: http://leatherboundpounds.wordpress.c...

definately review worthy. I'll admit I did adore the setting of Australia - mind you the isolation of the lighthouse still requires a map and a steady handed boat captain with a good boat - to get you even close to the action and whispers.
