This debut novel by Favel Parrett has a lot of high recommendations attached to it, and it’s one I’ve wanted to read for awhile. I am so glad I did, it was a wonderful story, very sad, very confronting, but definitely worth reading.
Harry, Miles and Joe are 3 children who lost their mother to a dreadful car accident a few years earlier, and the two younger boys have since lived with their moody and unpredictable father on the remote south coast of Tasmania. Joe moved out at 13 after a bitter and ...more

Gone straight to the top of my favourite reads of the year. Beautifully written, heart wrenching, brutal story that keeps you on the edge. The voices of Harry and Miles, one young and hopeful, the older, bares the scars of losing a Mum and living with a violent, angry father play against each other as you wait for more tragedy to hit these boys but hoping that it doesn't.

From the description alone, I knew this will be a sad book. It was very grief-laden but the sense of place was absolutely amazing. Despite the slowness and heaviness of the book, I was pulled through mainly by the beautiful prose of the country, the ocean, and even surfing. I felt as if the author has lived it all and it was told in a very honest, authentic voice.

Hands down best book I've read in years. These characters and the location will stay with me a long time. It's rare for a literary work to bring about an emotional response. I can't say anymore without coming off like a pretentious wanker. Just read it.

Simply told, a quick and easy read with subtle complexities that build gradually and take you by surprise. Tragic and heart-breaking, well written and devastatingly believable. I loved the skilful way this book was written with the voices of the 3 brothers so strong. A great debut novel from an Australian author I will be looking out for in the future.
