Shearwater was a small island not far from Antarctica, where a seed bank housed hundreds of thousands of the world's most precious seeds. The island only accommodated a few inhabitants - the Salt family, with Dominic at its head, and Raff (18), Fen (17) and Orly (9), his children - the last, as the island slowly succumbed to the sea. It was only weeks until the ship came to take them and the seeds to a safer place, when a ferocious storm hit Shearwater, bringing the island's destruction closer t ...more

I have enjoyed the 2 previous books of McConaghy's so I had high hopes for this one. I think she's kind of set herself up though for type; that is the atmospheric haunting sort of place with a gothic vibe of a plot. This time around, she has picked a perfect setting, full of atmosphere from the violent past, stormy weather, numerous flora & fauna which just highlight the wondrous wildness. And again, she's also set herself up as an environmentalist and a proud one, I believe, but that is one of ...more

Dominic Salt and his three children, Raff (18), Fen (17) and Orly (9) are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers. But with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants, packing up the seeds before they are transported to safer ground. Then, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman washes up on shore. Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for S ...more

Hard to review. I liked the concept but I found that there were alot of plot lines going on - probably too many? And I felt that this meant I felt like I got half a story and half the character development that I wanted. Maybe if this was just about climate changes and a mystery it might have worked better. I did enjoy the family dynamics and the mystery aspects, and, without giving any spoilers away- it is probably worth a re-read to see if time and distance change my opinion, because the writi ...more

I am obviously in the minority on this one but this is not for me.

Pacing is off and it feels confused - is it a mystery is it a commentary?

It has moments of profound insight and significance but overall I found this pretty flat.

Not sure what to make of this one. Beautifully written, descriptive and yet, it didn’t come together for me. Great setting. Too many themes. Pacing off. Love story that defies credibility.
