Gilly’s small town was getting her down. The heat of summer, the continual drought – all had a bearing on family life. And Gilly had left school; she hadn’t enjoyed it and had very few friends. She also couldn’t find a job, so spent time at home with her parents, feeling stifled – her Dad couldn’t keep his hands off other women, but her Mum would turn a blind eye, always taking him back into the family fold.

This is certainly not your traditional love story where everyone lives happily ever after. It's actually quite dark which probably won't appeal to most readers. Some of the issues were distressing and the characters not very likable. However I thought it was beautifully written. The author paints such a realistic picture of the setting and emotions of the characters that you could almost feel, taste, and see everything they were experiencing. I loved this book.
