This is for a younger audience (or about a younger protagonist) than McCarthy's other novels. If the premise sounds a little wacky, McCarthy manages to entirely pull it off, the voice is fantastic and the "realist" elements are so real that any magical possibilities seem to stitch themselves in fairly seamlessly. It's a pretty standard riff on the three wishes motif, but who doesn't love that motif? The narrative interest comes from the distinctive voices and from the way events unfold and shape ...more
