Given that this story deals with such issues as teen sex, suicide and child abuse, it is a deceptively simple read - which is no doubt Condon's strength and why he's so highly acclaimed.

Set at the end of the 60s, this is the story of Neil, his friends Troy and Zom, their struggles, their pain and most importantly their decisions and how these choises affect those around them. I actually just skimmed part of this and feel a bit guilty about giving a rating based on that. Unlike some of the other reviewers of this book, I didn't find it boring, but I do find it uncomfortable. I feel like I want to know more about what happens, but I don't want to read about it. A fantastic, quick read, a bit of a trip back in time (set in the 60's). The book title had me intrigued, & the story had me experiencing all types of emotions - especially coming from 16 year old Neil's POV & experiences. ...more
