The novel opens with Romochka on his own, in his home, looking for food, looking for his mother, his uncle, and looking for warmth. After who knows how long, he couldn't stand the hunger and coldness anymore and decided to venture outside. He came across Mamochka, a very maternal female dog, who adopted him into her clan. And so, he became dog boy.
