In the small town of Marralee in South Australia's vineyard region, not far from Adelaide, the annual festival was about to get underway once again. But this year was to be a little different, as a young woman and her family searched for answers to a woman who went missing the previous year from this same festival. Kim Gillespie's tiny baby, Zoe, was found snuggly covered in her pram, safe and secure, but alone. And her mother was nowhere to be found. Kim's teenage daughter Zara was leading the ...more

“Two days later, they found a shoe. Kim Gillespie’s white trainer, waterlogged and streaked with sediment, was recovered more than a kilometre to the east, jammed in the dam’s filters.”

Last year, Aaron Falk was in South Australia to be godfather to Henry, Greg and Rita Raco’s new baby. It was the week of the Marralee Annual Food and Wine Festival, and nobody I know would pass up a festival celebrating wine in South Australia!

Old friends gathered, new people were introduced, and people waved t

My favourite of the series though I think it's probably because it's a lot lighter (not as dark or hot or dry in atmosphere) and the end is filled with such hope. Suits me to a tee; love it! ...more

This is the third Harper book with Aaron Falk as the chief protagonist. Unfortunately I found some aspects of the plot predictable, and the characters largely weren't terribly interesting or differentiated. However, the main thing I found lacking was Harper's usual prowess with the landscape as a character. Because she usually does this so well, it stood out for me as largely missing this time.
As a side note, I found the programmer background of B character Gemma ridiculous-sounding. It was so

Another great Australian mystery! The story is set in South Australia's wine country and revolves around a woman who went missing, leaving her baby alone at a busy festival, a year before the events of the book.

The book sees the return of Aaron Faulk who has previously appeared in two other Harper books and features other characters we first met in 'The Dry'. 'Exiles' focuses on Aaron's personal life to a greater extent than the previous two books do and we get a much better sense of who the cha

In Jane Harper’s fifth novel, Exiles, investigator, Aaron Falk is asked to the South Australian wine country (fictitious Maralee Valley) for his godson's baptism.
The last time he was in this area, new mother, Kim Gillespie abandoned her infant daughter and disappeared at the annual festival.
A year later, Kim is still missing, and Falk is drawn into the investigation where dark questions linger, and long-ago truths begin to emerge.
Intricately plotted, with vivid descriptions of place and nuanced

A mother disappears from a festival supposedly leaving her daughter's pram unattended, never to return. But what exactly happens to Kim Gillespie. Her teen daughter Zara and former partner Charlie are keen to find out. Add to the fact that Charlie's brother is a police officer and believes that there is more to this than meets the eye. Of course, we have Aaron Falk, federal investigator who is in town on holiday, but he takes an interest in the case as well.
What can I say, another great story fr

Disappointing. I think the book could have been a lot shorter - too much repetition and the conclusion to both mysteries came right at the end. The book often felt more like a romance - I get why, because the author wanted to finish with Aaron Falk, but it felt long-winded a lot of the time. I enjoy the author's style of writing, so it wasn't onerous, just long with nothing happening for most of it. ...more

I enjoyed reading it and I love Aaron Falks character but by the end I wasn’t believing his gift of insight which was able read minds and solve cases. It didn’t seem very plausible.

Started a bit slow but I found the ending satisfying. Listened to the audio version which was well narrated by Stephen Shanahan.
