A little over three and a half stars.
The style reminds me of a pavane - stately and elegant, but for all that detached and a little aloof. There are rare moments when deep emotion impacts the page but, in general, the reporting approach made it difficult to connect with the characters. This is based on a true story about a young woman living in Czechoslovakia before, during and after WWII. I don’t think I’ve read many books set in Czechoslovakia before, and while I’ve read a lot of books set in and around WWII, I haven’t read anything previously about the involvement of Czechoslovakia in WWII.
This was a strong, faith-based read with the characters trusting God in all circumstances and living their lives for Him and guided by Him.
