Five stars is an understatement! This is one of the most delicious books I have ever read. The language was sublime. I have read over bits many times just digesting the lyrical prose such as "Somewhere inside her were the souls of words. They climbed out and stood beside her". Even though it was narrated by Death and was set in Nazi Germany, it was not gloomy but full of the triumphs and dignity and humour. What a find! That such a relatively young author should have such command of a truly individual writing style is both refreshing and astonishing. Purchased following the recent Adelaide Writers' Festival where Markus Zusak was apparently a big hit, especially with the crumpled linen Burnside set. (These last 4 words borrowed from a newspaper review - but can't remember which one)
