Five stars is an understatement! This is one of the most delicious books I have ever read. The language was sublime. I have read over bits many times just digesting the lyrical prose such as "Somewhere inside her were the souls of words. They climbed out and stood beside her". Even though it was narrated by Death and was set in Nazi Germany, it was not gloomy but full of the triumphs and dignity and humour. 2.5 stars. This is a rather difficult book for me to review. On the one hand it was great to read about a part of history from the perspective of Germans who were part of the Nazi regime but weren't necessarily supportive of it and occasionally acted against it, in support of the Jewish perspectives of the war.
