A really well written book. It keeps you interested in the ending the whole way through, and even at the end it's nearly a shock. It's one of those endings that you hope wont happen, but you know it will. It's told from the start, even on the blurb, that Robbie will die. But I liked him so much I hoped it would change.
The story is told from the perspective of Grace, the maid. She's a gorgeous narrator, albeit a bit slow in her reactions and a bit naive, though she readily admits it. She is telli ...more

I quite enjoyed this one. I was worried that after reading The Forgotten Gardenthat my expectations would be to high. But, this book is good in its own right =) and to me it had a different feel. i wish Robbie Hunter was in more, I liked him. And even though I knew he was going to die, I still hoped it didn't happen.
At times the book was a bit slow, but it keeps you wanting to know what happens to you power through all and good. Its good book, especially for the rainy weather we have been having ...more

I'm sad to admit that this is the first Kate Morton book that I've finished. Not due to lack of interest in the others far from it, but life got in the way and before I knew it, it had been months since I'd listened to them. This, though, I actually finished though I was still incredibly busy. Like all the other books, it quickly drew me into the plot and the characters which were believable. The basic story was alright, but the character of Grace was annoyingly passive and the 'mystery' of her true identity and the circumstances that led up to the other’s tragic end, dragged on so long that it got boring rather than intriguing. I did like the poet that returned from war with emotional issues and fell in love with his childhood friend, which seemed to create some interesting actuality. However the ending was ridiculous and unsatisfying and the whole book was too long.

Absolutely stunning debut novel!! Definitely for fans of Downton Abbey!!
I've known about Kate Morton for quite some time, but have just now read her first novel, The House at Riverton. I chose this particular book in lieu of another of hers, based on it's comparison to Downton Abbey since I'm currently going through withdrawal from the show.
The story is told by Grace, who starts off in her old age, and recalls her life at Riverton while she is in service there. She holds a long kept secret that ...more

Stunning read. Deeply haunting and frustratingly tragic. It has been years since I've read this book and you know a book is more than good when you look upon it years later and feelings still stir just thinking about it. It's ability to leave such a steady imprint shows what a timeless gem this novel is . Once in a while I look to see if the rights to this book has been bought. I can imagine what a beautiful movie this will be. I'll bumping this up from 4 stars to 5 because with time, I just app
