This is a re-read (listen)for my bookclub. I loved it then, I loved it now! Tim Winton is an amazing author..I think he is either loved or hated. The story revolves around 2 families living in close proximity with each other (within the same large house), and their lives for over 20 years. Quick and Rose, their young teenage lives, first jobs, then their adult lives...and both their families all around them, constantly. It is definitely worth a read/listen.

It is safe to say that this book is regularly lauded as an Australian classic, but not only that, it is loved. So I am being sacrilegious as an Australian in saying I didn't really like most if it. I loved the way Mr Winton talks about the water, the longing for it, the descriptions of the sun as it dozes in the ocean, the water like sheet metal, the pull of the River. That alone is 5 star writing. But Cloudstreet, I did not like. I did not like the house or most of the people that lived there.

Cloudstreet is an Australian classic and has been on my TBR list for as long as I can remember, but I finally got around to it this week.
What I did like about it -
1. The overall vibe, the touch of magical realism, the tragedies, the sweeping sense of the characters - all great.
2. I've read some people think the female characters aren't written well and I strongly disagree. Something isn't misogynistic because a character is flawed. They are ALL written with depth. Oriel is a force of nat ...more

I'll re-read sections of this book over and over as a guide to writing. The voice is perfect, the language enticing and the descriptions lyrical. But I still couldn't enjoy the story and it seems the type of story you're not meant to enjoy.

For some reason i have this great, unexplainable dislike for Tim Winton. I don't know why, I have never even picked up one of his books. I don't want to be one of those people that refuse to try any book for absolutley no reason. And besides, i may end up liking it =) or finally have a reason to dislike him. So its a win-win situation.
