I just saw the mini-series of this and what a wonderful job they did (with Tim Winton's supervision) of bringing the Lambs and Pickles to life (and otherwise).

Humour, sadness and the unexplained are always intriguingly intermingled in Winton's writing. His voice and style are distinctive and draw me into his stories, but I'm always left feeling as if I should have paid closer attention so, I would have understood more. Mind you, that makes it more interesting to re-read one day.

How do you begin to write about a book like Cloudstreet? It’s so fine, subtle and perfectly written that the reader is carried forward on the plot before he or she even realises that the book has had a transformative effect. Like Winton himself, there is something so humble about the book—it’s such a soft, generous offering—that it’s almost difficult to reconcile the honesty of the story—the lives of these two flawed families—with the fireworks that it creates in terms of its illumination of the ...more

I actually listened to this one as an audio book and really enjoyed it.

I read Breath by Tim Winton a couple of years ago and though I found it memorable, I can't say that I really enjoyed it.

Cloudstreet paints an interesting portrait of two rural families in WA during and after the second world war.

A wonderful book. The writing is gorgeous, something to be savoured, and the characters are such down to earth battlers, cheerful in adversity. I'm reading this again and, if anything, it's even better second time around. ...more

This was my first introduction to Tim Winton and since then I have read everything he has written. While I have enjoyed his other books, this is the one that I really loved. Maybe the fact that, at the time, I was living in the area where the book is set helped but it is a great story which really captures the atmosphere of the time. The characterisation is excellent and the development of the relationship between the family and their setting is fascinating. Winton would be a great introduction ...more

I really enjoyed reading this.

The characters were all so unique and realistic, each with their own addictions and obsessions, all affected in different ways by the community of Cloudstreet.

The setting and era was beautifully described, and having visited Perth, makes it all the more vivid. I could imagine walking into the store at Cloudstreet and meeting all the characters there.

The story itself drew me in and kept me reading, throughout the highs and lows of the characters lives. Definitely
