Seventy-year-old Ella Sinclair had recently lost her husband Sam after fifty years of marriage. The last few weeks had been hard, and she was struggling. But living with her eldest son, Anthony, his wife Kirsten and two teenage children was not the answer as Ella and Kirsten would never get along. When Anthony informed her she needed to give him control over the money from the sale of her and Sam’s house, it was the final straw. This is such a beautiful story so beautifully written it is heart-breaking and heart-warming at the same time, the emotions flow from the pages and the characters, such a lovely setting a small seaside town of Cutlers Bay on the York Peninsula in South Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Ella and Angie as I am sure any reader will.

I enjoyed this so much I'm going to track down the author's back catalogue.
This is a story about ageing & family. Ella is 70 & has recently lost her husband of 50 years, & her "delightful" children rush in to take advantage of her vulnerable state, forcing her into a path she wouldn't have chosen for herself. Fighting back, Ella escapes this untenable situation & makes a life elsewhere with the help of friends she makes in a small country town.

I read this book a while back and didn't review it then, but it has lingered with me - even some of the details - and that is unusual for me. It is an insightful story about relationships, with family and with the community and some of the changes that life brings as we age. I enjoy the feel of the book. It is just a story. It isn't attempting to convince you of any particular point of view, it is a character centered exploration of possible events in these lives. I enjoyed it.
