Now, I would have classed this short book as J rather than YA had there not been some horrifying scenes in it. The narrator, Felix, is a young Jewish boy who has been living in an orphanage in 1942 Poland, where his parents left him and from which he expects them to fetch him some day. What makes this such a chilling and hard-to-put-down book is Felix's naive and innocent view of the horrific events around him. It reminded me of John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in that respect. As the

As I think I’ve mentioned before, my oldest son is an excellent reader. However he’s not what I’d call an enthusiastic reader. Most of his commitment to reading comes because he’s been told that he’s good at it and like most kids, he likes praise. He’s 11 and in grade 5 but he’s already graduated out of the reading assessment grading they use and has been assessed at reading at a 14/15yo level. Now that he knows he can read at this advanced level, he wants to read a lot of pretty intense books.

I have seen this book everyday in the last 14 years I have worked in the bookshop but I've never read it. I had the opportunity to do so last week and here are my thoughts.
This book was well written and very respectful. The main character is a child who has been placed in an orphanage to hide him from the Nazi's. He believes his parents are world adventuring bookshop owners. As the course of the novel progresses we see the main character start to lose his innocence as he gradually finds out what ...more

Wonderful and eye opening. So sad, but don't let that put you off from reading it.

This is a remarkable book.
The chilling thing is, the innocence of the story which is so full of brutality.
Set during the holocaust, Felix,a Jewish orphan is alone in Poland.
He must not only try to survive starvation and thirst, but he must also try to survive from the Nazi's.
There are many twists and turns of events in the book. Its even tear jerking, the suspense is heartbreaking and magnificent.
A beautiful book.

I loved this book. Made me cry in the good and the bad way. I love Morris Gleitzman. This has got to be one of his classics.
