Was close to lobbing the book desultorily at or near the wall after the first 60-70 pages of plodding Literary scene-setting. When events then took the book firmly into horror territory, I found it a lot more engaging; and I very much liked puzzling at the ambiguity of it all.
A skilful short story writer can set the scene in a paragraph or two. I think this book could have made an amazing 100-130 page novella.
