This book did not grab me. It was not totally predictable but did not seem to have any 'dah dah!' moments. I think it might have been better if at some stage Sylvia's family in Sydney actually came to terms to what they were missing when Sylvia left. The characters of Mill and the neighbour (cant remember her name) were okay, but could have been expanded or used a bit more. ...more

I picked it up because I have been trying to read different stuff than what I normally read.

I was deeply suspicious of it most of the way through, but then towards the end I kind of relaxed and just enjoyed it.

It dealt really well with my expectations and had some nice gentle surprises.

I chose it because it was short and if I was going to read 'this sort of thing' at least it would be over soon. Now I am a little sad it was so short because I'd like to spend a little more time with her characte

Sylvie made me very impatient with her Early Christian Martyr syndrome but she did pull her finger out in the end. Leila had the best lines in the book, & also the most apposite. Sebastian, Max & Donald are sweeties & Great-aunt Mill is fun. There are some nasty family members, too, to provide leaven - but, if you act like a doormat you are likely to be walked on.

Fun & very easy-reading.

I just was not grabbed by this book. The main character was okay but there was no light bulb moment. It was predictable and really a quick read.
The book was part of the Good Reads campaign and was given to you if you purchased another book in the campaign.

Very light reading. This is my introduction to McInerney (to be followed by Alphabet sisters) and so far, I've liked what I read. Although nothing really happens in this book and it's too short to have any well developed plot, I still enjoyed it. ...more

A short, very light and easy read about a young woman making changes in her life in order to live independently of her overpowering family. Entertaining.
