After the previous book in this series ended in the grand tradition of the Japanese tragedy, it was an awesome idea to end the series in a "prequel" which told the story of what happened before the first book in the series, going back to the youth of Lord Otori. It brought the story full circle and offered even deeper insight into the events in the previous books. What a brilliant way to end this series of books. I think the author did an excellent job in writing these.
