This book felt like it didn’t really fit into either a YA or adult category comfortably. It was certainly more YA than adult, but there were very adult-type themes that I really wouldn’t want a 14 year old (the age of the main character) reading. The main character also seemed a strange mix of mature and immature - being more observant of things than I would suspect most 14 year olds are normally, but then thinking things that made me roll my eyes because they seem so childish. Wow... I was amazingly surprised by this book and that pleases me most of all! To be surprised!

My first perception of the book is that it is about a 14 yo girl struggles. Indeed, it is that and more. Right off the bat, I could feel the poignant pains that I, myself, felt when I was of that age. It wasn't really that bad now that I looked back but maybe it was that bad when I was going through it. This is what Plum "Aria" Cowly is going through - "growing pains".

Sonya Hartnett is a master at reminding you of what it is like to be a child. This story is about a 13 year old girl and the centre of her universe is of course her friends and her position in the group. I cringed so many times while reading this the memories of my own 13 year old self were closer to the surface than I realised. Strongly recommended.
