One of the key objections I had to Richard Flanagan’s last novel, The Unknown Terrorist was that it put the ideology first: making a political point at the expense of the characters and the plot. Richard Flanagan is one of my favourite authors and it was such a pleasure to read this book full of wonderful writing and ideas. Several linked histories are brought to life, that of Charles Dickens and of the arctic explorer and governor of Tasmania Sir John Franklin and his wife Jane, and that of an Aboriginal orphan girl named Matthinna, whose tragic story maybe reflects that of many other Tasmanian Aborigines of that time.
