I have oscillated between 4&5 stars for this book.
I have chosen 5 stars because despite the short book I was torn between wanting to devour it all in one sitting and savouring it for a deeper read.
The language. The imagery.
The dogs!
All so heartbreaking.
The complex layers of post-apartheid South Africa were deftly and intricately woven into a family tale.
Don't expect t to leave this story elated. Rather you will feel slightly on edge with the sparse ending. ...more

The way that Coetzee writes is deceptive as you lulled into the rhythm of his words and you find yourself turning page after page with great eagerness even though you are completely overwhelmed by the subject matter.
David Lurie is not a likeable character at all, there is almost nothing redeemable about this guy but still you keep reading.

my book has a better cover than this! (a great photo with a dog..)
3 and a half stars from me.
I liked it a lot - good but depressing as f%^&! Explores and gives some interesting insights into the state of modern South Africa, racism and the aftershocks of Apartheid which, unfortunately, will continue for a long time.
Probably could have identifed more with a female protagonist -David is an interesting character but his lust/desire for women younger than his daughter squicked me out and kept me at ...more
