Western Australia, 1930. Not 1830. . . 1930. This is recent history. 2400km, barefoot, through rivers and harsh bush, always hiding. Three “half-caste” Aboriginal girls, 8, 11, and 15, ran away from the Moore River Native Settlement, where they’d been sent in the south of the state, and trekked all the way back north on their own, following the rabbit-proof fence.

It’s an important story, simply told.

This is a devastating book. It's hard to imagine this really happened in my home country, but it did. The story of three displaced sisters and their determindation to return home is a story that inspired and yet haunted me even as I read it.

A very short but very moving story of a huge walk to freedom.

A part of Australian history that is only now coming to the general consciousness through a movie.
Please read the book, read the language used and hear the own voices of the characters.

It will only take you a couple of hours but it is worth it, especially if you are feeling frustrated in your life and need a little motivation, nothing like the journey of three young girls walking across the desert for months in a bid for freedom to

Isn’t it just amazing what persistence & resilience can achieve? These girls are so young and yet to have walked so far in the Australian climate and survive; that’s a mindboggling feat! They had a little bit of help with food & direction but the point is they walked over 1,000 miles. I cannot even imagine…

The book begins with a quick history lesson on the English settlement of Australia which led to the existence of these 3 half-caste girls. The silliest reason for their removal from their
