No matter what Peter Carey writes, there’s always a playful extravagance in his work, coupled with pleasurable, fast paced plot and linguistic gorgeousness. As with Illywacker, Parrot and Olivier in America has a little bit of chaos in the structure, mimicking the multiple shades of truth and reliability. This book took me ages to read, firstly because I could not get into it and after a while, even though I wanted to read it, it took a long time to read.
I enjoyed the discussions about the rags to riches philosophy in America. I kept comparing it to a madenr, humorous book I read How to Lose Friends and Alienate People: A Memoirwhich also commented on the same, but 200 yearsish apart.
I wish the ending would have been different ... Olivier should have been a lot happier and I still dont get it ... ...more

Alas the second book in a row I have read but couldn't finish. I have liked Peter Carey's books in the past, but could not connect with any of the characters, the style of writing or the genre it was trying to fit in.

I listened to this as an audio book, I think if I had attempted to read the written word I wouldn't have finished the book at all.
